Before we begin, we want to clear that Dutasteride as a treatment for hair loss
has not yet been approved by the FDA.
You should not use it until you have the approval of the competent authorities in your country.
Currently sold in soft gelatin capsules of 0.5 mg dissolved in a mixture of mono-glycerides and is prescribed
to treat only
patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, but many people is trying to stop Androgenic Alopecia with this product.
Preliminary studies show moderate results superior to those of Finasteride
In fact, the drug is being used for benign prostatic hyperplasia at much lower doses than Finasteride during the same period of time,
and it result more responsive
Anyway results are superior, but not "dramatically better".
The best-known brand-name Dutasteride is "Avodart", but remember that has not been approved to treat baldness.
The big difference between the Finasteride
and Dutasteride, is that the first one only blocks the
enzyme 5-alpha-reductase type II, which means 70% of DHT, when the second gapes both types (I and II) which is 95% DHT.
The enzyme 5-alpha-reductase is, in some way, responsible for hair loss because it is responsible for converting the hormone testosterone
into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The problem is the follicles (in people with Androgenic Alopecia) are sensitive to DHT
and they respond by reducing its size until finally the entire follicular structure dies.
If you want to know in detail the causes of hair loss, I recommend you to read the article: Causes of Hair Loss
. You'll find a clearer explanation of the process of baldness.
In Phase II studies of Dutasteride, involved 416 men between 21 and 45 years with male pattern alopecia IIIV type,
IV and V according to the Norwood classification
. The study lasted six months and was done with
the double blind method.
The results demonstrated an unparalleled effectiveness to placebo and even superior to Finasteride. Unfortunately the side effects also increased.
While these results are not definitive, we can see that the adverse effects in patients using Dutasteride are in all cases higher than those treated with placebo.
Important for Treatment:
The recommended dosage is one 0.5 mg capsule per day. In the same way as Finasteride, if you ever forget to take your dose,
don not try to retrieve it the next day. Retake normally as if nothing had happened but try to remember because the benefits
of Dutasteride require continuity.
In general, daily use is necessary for four to six months to get results. If you stop your treatment, your scalp back to its
original state within twelve months.
Do not use if:
The drug has not been approved by the competent authorities of your country.
If you have hypersensitivity to any Componenents of this product.
In no way can be used by women, children or babies.
If you suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia, check with your doctor to let you know the proper dosage
They have not yet been clearly defined and not yet approved by the FDA. In the table above you can see the side effects are expected.
To perceive changes in your scalp have to wait at least four months. The maximum results are seen after several years.
You must be constant as it is a long-term treatment.
Remember not to start any treatment without first consulting your doctor.
